1. Phrasal Verb là gì?
Phrasal verbs (hay còn gọi là cụm động từ). Là một cụm từ bao gồm động từ + trạng từ/giới từ và hoạt động tương tự 1 động từ trong câu.
Phrasal Verb trong IELTS đem lại sự linh hoạt, logic và ấn tượng hơn thay vì chỉ sử dụng động từ tương tự. Bên cạnh đó, có những PV cố định là tất yếu phải dùng mang ý nghĩa riêng cho câu.
Phrasal verb là sự kết hợp giữa một động từ và một hoặc hai tiểu từ (particles). Các tiểu từ này có thể là giới từ (preposition) hoặc trạng từ (adverb). Tuy nhiên khi thêm các tiểu từ này vào sau, nghĩa của phrasal verb sẽ hoàn toàn khác biệt so với động từ tạo nên nó.

2. Đặc điểm và cách sử dụng phrasal verb
2.1 Transitive hoặc Intransitive
Hiểu được sự khác nhau giữa ngoại động từ (transitive verbs) và nội động từ (intransitive verbs) sẽ giúp ích cho bạn rất nhiều.
Tuy nhiên trong bài viết này, chúng ta không đi sâu vào việc phân tích ngữ pháp mà chỉ cần hiểu đơn giản rằng để câu nói có nghĩa thì:
Ví dụ với phrasal verb “bump into”, có nghĩa là tình cờ gặp ai đó. Và bắt buộc, phải có “một ai đó” theo sau cụm động từ này.
Bạn không thể nói:
“ Yesterday, I bumped into. Haven’t seen her in years!
Thay vào đó, bạn phải nói kiểu như là:
“ Yesterday, I bumped into Sarah. Haven’t seen her in years!
Ngoại lệ: trong câu nói, chúng ta không muốn tiết lộ ai là người chúng ta tình cờ gặp.
“ I went to town yesterday. You’ll never guess who I bumped into.”
Tôi đã đến thị trấn ngày hôm qua. Bạn không đoán được tôi đã gặp ai đâu.
Thì ngay cả như vậy, “who” chính là ai đó mà chúng ta phải có để làm cho câu trở nên có nghĩa. Mặt khác, một số phrasal verb lại là nội động từ, nghĩa là nó có thể đứng một mình trong câu.
Ví dụ:
Grow up: trưởng thành, lớn lên.
Lưu ý: có những phrasal verb vừa là ngoại động từ vừa là nội động từ.
Wake up: thức dậy
2.2 Cụm động từ tách rời (separable) và không tách rời (inseparable)
Giống như việc phân biệt phrasal verb thành ngoại động từ và nội động từ, chúng ta hay làm quen với khái niệm cụm động từ tách rời và không tách rời.
Hãy quay trở lại phrasal verb “wake up”. Chúng ta muốn đánh thức ai đó dậy (waking someone else up), thì phrasal verb “wake up” sẽ đi kèm với đối tượng (someone else) mà chúng ta muốn đánh thức.
Tuy nhiên, wake up cũng có thể tách rời ra vì khi đặt someone else vào giữa wake và up, nghe vẫn ổn đúng không. Ý nghĩa câu nói vẫn sẽ không thay đổi, người bản ngữ vẫn thường xuyên dùng cách nói này.
Vậy chúng ta có thể nói theo 2 cách mà nghĩa không thay đổi:
Tiếng Anh cũng phong phú và thú vị như tiếng Việt đúng không nào.
Và cuối cùng, sẽ có những phrasal verb không thể tách rời.
Look up to someone: ngưỡng mộ, tôn trọng ai đó.
Chúng ta không thể nói “look someone up to” hay “look up someone to”, mà phải là:
” I really look up to my father.
Tôi rất kính trọng bố mình.
Hiểu rõ một phrasal verb là ngoại động từ (transitivie) hay nội động từ (intransitivie) và tách rời (separable) hay không thể tách rời (inseparable) sẽ giúp bạn sử dụng nó một cách chính xác cũng như tiến bộ rất nhanh.
NHỚ: Khi học phrasal verb, hãy tìm hiểu thêm về tính transitive – intransitive và separable – inseparable.
2.3 Cách ghi nhớ phrasal verbs
Trước khi cung cấp cho bạn những phrasal verb thường gặp nhất trong giao tiếp tiếng Anh hàng ngày, Ms Hoa Giao tiếp sẽ chia sẻ một thủ thuật để bạn ghi nhớ các phrasal verb: tập trung vào các chủ đề.
Hãy tưởng tượng bạn đang thưởng thức cuộc đua xe công thức một. Sẽ có rất nhiều phrasal verb được sử dụng liên quan đến “pull” đấy:
” Hamilton pulled up at the pit stop, Vettel is pulling away slowly, Rosberg is pulling ahead.
Bạn đã cảm thấy hòa mình và đường đua chưa nào, bây giờ đến với sân bay nhé. Bạn hẳn sẽ nghe hoặc thấy những thông báo liên quan đến hành lý của mình.
” The plane takes off in 10 minutes, don’t forget to look after your luggage.
Chuyến bay sẽ cất cánh trong vòng 10 phút nữa, đừng quên kiểm tra hành lý của bạn.
THỰC HÀNH: Hãy viết một chủ đề hoặc tình huống ở giữa trang giấy. Sau đó hãy thêm những phrasal verb mà bạn biết (hoặc tìm kiếm) liên quan đến chủ đề, tình huống đó. Đừng quên lưu ý xem mỗi phrasal verbs như vậy là ngoại động từ hay nội động từ, là tách rời hay không thể tách rời nhé.

3. Một số Phrasal thường gặp theo chủ đề sau trong IELTS
3.1 Phrasal verb thường gặp Education
Giáo dục là chủ đề phổ biến nhất trong kì thi IELTS mà ở kỹ năng nào bạn cũng bắt gặp những câu hỏi liên quan đến. Dưới đây là những cụm từ hay theo chủ đề này để bạn sử dụng.
Ex. Being engrossed in video games usually makes children fall behind in class.
Ex. I have been trying to catch up on the assignment from last week.
Ex. It is highly recommended for students to always go over their revision notes before taking the exam.
Ex. If you are interested in joining another extracurricular activity, you should read up on it before deciding.
Ex. Nowaday, the great number of students has the tendency ti drop out of college to work and support their families.
Ex. It is the undergraduates’ responsibility to hand their assignment on time as usual.
Ex. After each lesson, it is vital to sum up the main points
3.2 Phrasal verb thường gặp Family and Friends
Một chủ đề quen thuộc nhưng cũng không kém phần quan trọng và khó khăn. Hôm nay, những từ vựng hay được chia sẻ dưới đây sẽ giúp bạn kể về gia đình và bạn bè của mình thêm dễ dàng và được đánh giá cao hơn trong bài thi.
Ex. I found it challenging to get along with my classmates as we do not share any interests.
Ex. In the weekend, my family usually hosts a get-together for our relatives to come and have dinner.
Ex. As people got older, they simply grew apart.
Ex. In my country, it is a tradition that the young look after the old in the family.
Ex. After marriage, couples have the propensity to look for a peaceful place to settle down.
Ex. Several years ago, my parents had splitted up and my mom decided to move to America.
Ex. My children have all grown up and left home now.
3.3 Phrasal verb thường gặp Environment
Environment là chủ đề khá rộng nên bạn cần chuẩn bị học nhiều từ vựng để khi gặp trong bài thi không bỡ ngỡ. Đặc biệt, với Speaking thì bạn cần nên có cụm từ đi kèm để thực hiện bài nói hay hơn.
Ex. The residents around the area helped cleaned up the beaches after an oil spillage.
Ex. Deforestation requires high considerations and care since many trees has been flattening down for the last several years.
Ex. Because of prolonged periods of drought, many areas and rivers have dried up.
Ex. The toxic waste must be disposed of properly to avoid harmful chemical for human.
Ex. The sun is heating up the Poles’ icebergs.
Ex. Humans have been using up the Earth’s resources.
Ex. Natural disaster such as tsunami or earthquakes had wiped out many valuable properties in Japan.
Ex. People are advised to develop a habit of not throwing away trash on the street.
3.4 Phrasal verb thường gặp Travel and Holidays
Ex. I really appreciated the man who dropped me off at the airport.
Ex. My friend’s family and me have been waiting to pick her up when her flight landed.
Ex. It was my first time to check in such a luxury resort.
Ex. I’m looking forward to hearing your news at your earliest convenience.
Ex. My favourite moment on the airplane when it takes off.
Ex. I would prefer to travel by motobike on short journeys so I could look around the stunning sights during the trip.
Ex. The airplane gets in around 8 pm.
Ex. Last summer, my group of friends got away for a short 6-day trip to Korea .
Ex. Every time I travel to America, I stop over in Japan for a few days to enjoy its traditional cuisine.
3.5 Phrasal verb thường gặp Weather
Ex. According to the weather forecast, it will clear up later in the day.
Ex. After the pouring rain, the temperature has cooled down a little.
Ex. As we were about to leave the camping area, the sun began to come out.
Ex. The sun had gone in and the forest was starting to get darker.
Ex. I love spring because the weather starts to warm up.

3.6 Phrasal verb thường gặp Food/Cooking
Ex. My mom boiled down the leftover sauce to make it more flavorsome.
Ex. Jenny was cooking her chicken noodles soup on high heat and it boiled over.
Ex. The chef is chopping up the truffle mushroom for his signature dish.
Ex. My brother is on a strict diet. Thus, he has to cut back on dairy.
Ex. My family and I decided to eat out on my siter’s birthday this Sunday.
Ex. My family had surprise visitors yesterday, but my mom managed to whip up a light meal for them.
Ex. After preparing the fruits, my sister cut them out to decorate for the dessert dish.
3.7 Phrasal verb thường gặp Work
Ex. The scientists are enlisting the elaborate plan to carry out research to find effective medicine to treat human’s diseases.
Ex. In the next few years, ABC Company will take over the small businesses.
Ex. Our company is taking on new staffs at the moment.
Ex. The students have already handed in their report to the professor before class.
Ex. Due to traumatic bankruptcy, the company has to layoff thousand of its employees.
Ex. Jenny’s daughter admitted to the hospital this morning, so she decided to call off from work.
3.8 Phrasal verb thường gặp Free time/Hobbies
Ex. At the end of the year, many people decided to go on vacations to rest up and chill out after a competitive season.
Ex. I took up yoga as I felt that I had to lose some weight.
Ex. I believe that when you get into a particular kind of work or activity then you will manage to become involved in it.
Ex. The professional football player suffered a serious injury that obliged him to give up on playing soccer for the rest of the season.
Ex. In the summer, I usually engage in outdoor activities by joining in community service group.
Ex. In my leisure time, I usally hang out with my friends at the shopping mall.
Ex. We often start different hobbies throughout our life, but we don’t always keep them up for very long.
